San Antonio sits on the seam between two kinds of hunting country. North and west of Loop 1604 the Balcones Escarpment lifts into cedar brakes and live oak, where whitetail are thick and small and a .243 or 7mm-08 does everything asked of it. South of U.S. Highway 90 the brush country opens out toward Pearsall, Cotulla and Laredo, the deer season runs two weeks longer, and the rifles get heavier. We stock for both, and for the ranch work in between.
That means light bolt rifles in .243, 7mm-08, .270 and .308 from August onward for leases in Kerr, Bandera, Kendall and Gillespie counties, AR-pattern rifles in 5.56 and .308 all year for hogs on the Guadalupe and San Antonio river bottoms and for axis and aoudad on the Divide, dove guns for the September opener over the grain at Gonzales and Uvalde, and carry pistols every month of the year for a city where licence-free carry has been the rule since 2021.
